Senior Electrochemical Engineer
Redwood Materials is seeking an electrochemical engineer to improve the design, performance, and lifetime of electrochemical conversion reactors for our battery recycling plants. In this role, you will drive testing and data analysis of novel electrochemical cells and systems for converting lithium-ion battery waste material into useful products. You will use your expertise in electrochemistry to quantify device performance through rigorous testing and execute a technology development roadmap to ensure electrochemical cells meet their required performance and lifetime targets. You will also be responsible for executing and reporting on design-of-experiments to understand how devices perform as a function of operating variables and design parameters. The ideal candidate will bring substantial experience in testing and analyzing electrochemical devices, such as electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries, or similar. You will be expected to collaborate closely with mechanical and chemical engineering design teams to commercialize a new electrochemical technology.
Responsibilities will include:
- Design, perform, and analyze electrochemical tests to assess performance and durability of cell and stack prototypes.
- Critically analyze and interpret experimental data and present results to the broader team in weekly meetings.
- Drive experiments to evaluate product lifetime and identify failure mechanisms and their acceleration factors.
- Develop methods to diagnose failure mechanisms and perform FMEA in collaboration with engineers from a variety of disciplines.
- Translate critical learnings from bench testing into design requirements for a commercialized electrochemical cell and system.
Desired Qualifications:
- BS or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience working in the field of electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering.
- Expert in testing and diagnostics of electrochemical cell or systems, such as electrolyzers, chlor-alkali reactors, fuel cells, batteries, or similar.
- Deep understanding of the interaction between design, performance, durability, and cost in electrochemical systems.
- Experience with electrochemical test methods, such as voltammetry, galvanostatic/potentiostatic testing, and impedance spectroscopy.
- Experience in design-of-experiments and building models with statistical software, such as JMP, minitab, tableau or similar.
- Experience executing data analysis in Python is a plus.
- Excellent verbal and presentation skills for communicating key findings from test data.

Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work hands on the lab, including standing and operating equipment at a lab bench.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: office, machine shop, wet laboratory, chemical plant, outdoor test sites.
- Exposures encountered: hazardous materials, electrical hazards.
- Essential physical requirements: working hands-on in a research lab setting.
- Travel required as needed, less than 10%.
