Role Summary
The Staff Test Engineer works with other members of the test team to lead and execute system level Powertrain testing as part of Rivian’s product development process. The activities also include enhancing test facility capability, working with requesters on methodology development, and automating testbed operation for efficient test execution. Development of automated post-processing routines, checks on data quality and feedback to the test requester are also required.
Responsibilities
- Perform and lead system level development and validation tests at the powertrain and vehicle levels in a lab environment
- Lead the development of new and existing test system capabilities, from requirements definition through implementation
- Develop electric powertrain test methods that include instrumentation and data acquisition setup needs, accessory equipment requirements, and data quality and repeatability assurance checks
- Utilize efficient test methodologies, such as statistical DoEs, and testing best practices to maximize throughput and data quality
- Define drive unit and gearbox test profiles and, support the implementation of the test profiles into automated test scripts
- Analyze test data, write test reports and sign-off for publication
- Troubleshoot testing issues with bespoke test beds and devices under test
- Support departmental continuous improvement initiatives
- Support other Rivian teams in the generation and execution of Rivian Test Standards, providing technical input on test setups and development / validation plans
- Provide electric powertrain testing expertise to other areas of Rivian
Qualifications
- BS in Engineering with minimum 8 years of relevant experience
- Experience leading powertrain product development engineering project in a test lab environment (e.g. validation testing and /or performance and emissions development)
- Powertrain and / or vehicle level product development test experience is preferred
- Demonstrated experience in data reduction, analysis, and reporting
- Familiarity with the design, construction, implementation, and validation of electric powertrain test equipment
- Proficiency with automotive control module development software (e.g. ETAS, Vector) and how to setup network communications to control modules and testbed software
- Experience in configuring and parameterizing AVL PUMA test systems is preferred including the implementation of automated test routines; familiarity with alternative systems is also acceptable
- Flexibility and adaptability to evolving test requirements and development standards
- Ability to work autonomously but also lead and mentor junior engineers
