Internship Term:
Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December 2025 and December 2027.

In this role you will join Rivian’s Failure Analysis Team in Quality and Reliability, contributing to material specification, testing, and qualification for critical structural components in Rivian's next-generation vehicles. This role is pivotal to ensuring that Rivian's materials are durable, production-ready, and crash-worthy, especially for the large-scale structural castings in Rivian's upcoming R2 platform.
Responsibilities
- Material Characterization: Conduct in-depth analysis of large form factor aluminum castings, focusing on skin effect impact, strength, and toughness.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Utilize statistical methods to analyze mechanical testing data, applying data science techniques to quantify and interpret results.
- Destructive Testing: Perform and analyze destructive testing procedures, such as the VDA bending test, to assess mechanical properties critical for structural integrity and safety.
- Fabrication and Machining: Fabricate test coupons and machine samples for characterization testing, contributing hands-on to preparation and testing.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Quality, Reliability, and Supply Chain teams to align test findings with production readiness and supply chain considerations.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in or recently completed a Master’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. A background in structural materials is preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong foundation in material science, including experience or coursework in solid-state chemistry, material thermal properties, and structural durability.
- Skills in Data Science and Statistics: Proficiency in data analysis, with experience in statistical software (e.g., Minitab or JMP) and data science techniques.
- Hands-on Experience: Practical experience in machining, fabrication, and testing of materials; familiarity with destructive testing methods.
- Automotive Knowledge: An understanding of automotive structural materials and mechanical testing is a plus.
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical mindset with the ability to perform complex data analysis and present insights effectively.

Pay Disclosure
Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law.
Rivian provides robust wellness benefits, and a medical insurance package for interns, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
