Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Responsibilities
- Join Rivian’s Battery Advanced Materials organization to develop cutting-edge battery technologies for Rivian’s upcoming vehicle platforms.
- Lead the advanced pack materials development and optimization of cylindrical and prismatic EV cells to analyze and understand their materials performance metrics, compatibility with cell design, and improvements at the pack level.
- Manage a small team and/or serve as a technical leader, composed of battery mechanical, materials, and product test engineers to optimize materials selection and module/pack design space.
- Implement new state-of-art (sub-)component soft/hard pack materials (e.g., potting, adhesive, CCA, cooling tube, etc.) and lead thorough analyses to understand the impact of design decisions on the cell, module, pack performance, and cost.
- Expand single-/cluster-cell tests toward more representative module-/pack-level test capabilities with pack materials, working together with cross-functional stakeholders to enhance key performance indicator(s) such as DCFC, heat generation, and/or durability/reliability.
- Establish a technical connection of cell chemistry, design, and form factor with pack advanced materials roadmaps to support future vehicle product launches.
- Bring together cross-functional teams specializing in cell advanced materials, advanced materials protype, cell integration, module and pack mechanical design, simulation, vehicle attribute, and supply chain to balance battery (cell/module/pack) performance, cost, and cycle life.
- Establish advanced pack concept beyond today’s pack architecture (e.g., cell-to-pack, cell-to-chassis, high performance, extremely fast charge (XFC) technology, immersion cooling, beyond Li-ion batteries, etc.) toward product implementation.
- Manage technical development, resources, lab equipment, and organizational operations to ensure optimal allocation of tools, materials, and personnel for efficient project completion, aligning with corporate goals.
Qualifications
- PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or chemistry, with minimum
- 12+ years of industrial work experience relevant to lithium-ion batteries and/or electrochemical system (minimum 15+ years combining academic experience).
- 7+ years of previous experience in managing a team with ability to deliver consistent communication, clear goal setting, and fostering a positive, collaborative environment, while adapting to changing team dynamics and individual needs.
- Strong project management skills, including ability to manage teams, track deliverables, mitigate risks, and align resources.
- Prior experience in cell materials and/or battery component down-selection with a deep technical understanding of mechanical, electrochemical, and analytical techniques to evaluate critical performance metrics.
- Experience in driving cell/module/pack prototyping and/or product development efforts relevant to PHEV/EV/ESS applications (i.e., at scales relevant to automotive specifications).
- Extensive proficiency in developing design of experiments (DOE) and bill of materials (BOM) cost model.
- Ability to best optimize energy, power, fast charge, cycle life, and safety for specific battery pack specifications.
- A deep understanding of the trends in battery development, linking from current states to emerging cell chemistries.
- Proven research experience in next-generation battery architectures, including current LIBs and beyond, with the ability to foster collaborations with top-tier universities and national laboratories.
- Knowledge of major methods of battery characterization methods, electrochemical analysis such as CV, EIS, and/or GITT, materials characterization such as SEM, XRD, Raman, FTIR, BET, TGA/DSC, and/or ICP, and mechanical/thermal/safety testing.
